Christmas, Florida History

Chrismas, Florida had its origin in a siege of war in 1835.  U.S. soldiers, sent to help the white settlers battle the Seminole Indians, occupied the log fort on December 25th and called it Fort Christmas.  Old Fort Christmas was destroyed by a forest fire many years ago.  Live oaks, pines and a tangled undergrowth of palmetto are all that mark the original site.  The replica of Fort Christmas was built in an Orange County Park to house a museum and was dedicated on December 17, 1977.  Admission is free.

On June 27, 1892, the Christmas Post Office was established with Samuel B. Hurlbut as the first postmaster.  The Postmaster’s son, Van, carried the mail on his back from Chuluota, 12 miles to the north, twice a week.  Although the area was known as Fort Christmas for awhile, the Post Office has just be CHRISTMAS.  Christmas has had 10 postmasters.  Mrs. Juanita S. Tucker (a daughter-in-law of the former Postmaster) was Postmaster from 1932 until her retirement on December 31, 1974.  Mrs. Joy Chittum, the most recent past Postmaster retired on September 3, 1992.  The current postmaster, Mrs. Joan Roth Templeton, was appointed December 26, 1992.

Christmas, a small unincorporated community, is located 23 miles east of Orlando and 14 miles west of Titusville on Highway 50 in Orange County.  Principal industries are farming, citrus groves and cattle.  The residents are neighborly and kind, and are always available to help each other in times of trouble.  Many are descendents of the first settlers; but there are a number of new ones too, bringing talents and cultures from other nationalities.

The permanent living Christmas tree is decorated year round and is lighted during the month of December.  A tree-lighting ceremony with Christmas caroling is held on the first Sunday evening in December each year.  The sign beside the tree designates its purpose:  THE PERMANENT CHRISTMAS TREE AT CHRISTMAS, FLORIDA IS THE SYMBOL OF LOVE AND GOODWILL, THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT EVERY DAY IN THE YEAR.  It is a real delight to tourists and is possible one of the most photographed trees in our country.

The Peace Garden across from the present Post Office is dedicated to the Prince of Peace and those who have given their lives for the cause of peace and freedom.  The stones around the door and nativity building (which houses a life-sized Christmas crèche) are from the Governors of the 50 states.  The old Post Office building is located in the Garden and will be opened as a museum soon.

There is magic in the name Christmas which attracts visitors.  Each year thousands visit the Post Office to remember their friends at home with the cherished Christmas postmark.  December brings an avalanche of mail and people from all over the U.S. and several foreign countries.  Hundreds of thousands of pieces of mail are postmarked and dispatched annually to every state and almost every country around the globe.

This is Christmas, a small rural community, typical of America, extending the Christmas spirit of Peace and Good Will to all—the gladness of Christmas which is Hope, the spirit of Christmas which is Peace, and the heart of Christmas which is love—CHRISTMAS EVERY DAY!
